American Airlines selected Thales’ AVANT IFE solution to equip its new Airbus A321XLR and Boeing 787-9 aircraft for transcontinental and international travel. American’s aircraft (service entry expected in 2023) will be the launch customer flying with Thales’ new line of Optiq displays, which has 4K high dynamic range (HDR) seatback screens enhanced with Samsung QLED proprietary technology. The system is capable of Bluetooth connection at each seat, which allows passengers to pair their wireless headphones to the system. Premium Class seats will have 17-inch displays accompanied with a 5-inch touchscreen handset offering a true second-screen experience. Premium Economy and Economy Class will feature 13.3-inch displays and 11.6-inch displays, respectively.

New inflight entertainment technologies are rapidly evolving to deliver much more than passive entertainment as innovative onboard trends leap to keep up with passenger demand for the same connectivity speeds and bandwidth they have on the ground.

FAQs

How does IFE work? ›

IFE systems seemingly work without any visible wires. The wiring is actually tucked away into the aircraft walls, with the wiring starting in the top panel, next to the oxygen masks and AC wents. These wires then connect to the power units, which are present every few rows in the sidewall of the aircraft.

What does on demand video mean on a plane? ›

Audio-video on demand (AVOD) entertainment has also been introduced. This enables passengers to pause, rewind, fast-forward, or stop a program that they have been watching. This is in contrast to older entertainment systems where no interactivity is provided for.

When did airplanes get TVS? ›

Despite these early forays into IFE, it wasn't until the early 1960s that the market really began to take off. Trans World Airlines (TWA) launched the first IFE system on a Boeing 707 in 1961, and began regularly showing movies on scheduled flights. Other airlines began to follow suit.

Do airplanes have movies? ›

Some airlines also offer free movies that you can watch on your own phone, tablet or laptop through their inflight entertainment system by connecting to the plane's Wi-Fi, and you can watch these movies without paying for the Wi-Fi. Otherwise, you may want to download a movie to watch offline on your own device.
